First of all, thanks for the feedback about sterilizers. Now I'd like your feedback on cloth diapers! Dan and I are planning on using cloth diapers, and a friend has recommended BumGenius diapers, which look pretty sweet, even though they seem expensive. Does anyone out there have experience with this brand?
My main questions:
How many cloth diapers should we purchase?
What is your recommended brand and why?
Any other tips or information?

We could not speak more highly of Fuzzi Bunz. We love them! They are a little pricey as well but you can often find them on eBay gently used. We had 17 size small (the ones that you will use at least 8 of each day) so we could wash every other day. We have 12 mediums (and wash about every 3 days) and Asher has worn that size since he was 4 months old.
There are so many great options out there and I know that not every style works for every baby so it can be overwhelming to figure it out. Good luck making your decision. You could order one of a couple different brands that you like and then ask a friend to try them on their baby. We did that. We are so excited for you guys!

We use Bum Genius and are very happy with them. We really like the adjustable size on version 3.0
We use a bunch of different brands, we really like WonderWorks, which have the cover included on them and have an insert for extra absorption. They also adjust from size small to large so we are still using them for Maetia. They are more expensive though. We also got a lot of different used ones and have tried them all. Mostly I would say that if they can adjusted for size of belly, and leg chubbyness that is worth the extra money. I also like the snaps better than velcro for washing unless you can find the ones where the velcro has a folded side so that when you are washing they don't all stick together. That is frustrating. Also, it depends if you have a heavy wetter. Maetia was a super heavy wetter and we had to use lots of extra liners in them. SOme diapers come with extra liners or ones you can buy but some don't. it may be worth getting a few liners, or making your own, just in case. We also love the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap as a wrap (if you don't get the all-in-ones). THis wrap goes around all legs sizes and keeps wetness inside.
The best advice anyone gave me was not to bother at the very beginning because you are exhausted and the baby is pooping and peeing more than you'd think possible. It is overwhelming to have to wash that many diapers, and outfits every day. We waited one month and then started. Good luck. :) We are so excited for you two!!!
We use Mother-Ease and our original set of 30 diapers is going strong with kid #4. We love them, but it does take some getting used to having to wash them. A jet spray attached to your toilet help.
I recommend you get an introductory set of your top 3 choices and try them out. Your lifestyle and tolerance level may dictate which kind you get. Mother-Ease works great for us as we are on kid #4 with the same pair as kid #1! They are one size fits all.
Like others have said. I would wait until they are about 3-4 months old before going with cloth.
I love our Mother-Ease adjustable size. It works from beginning to potty-training and has inserts you can buy, though we usually use the Chinese prefolds as inserts. I've tried other brands and not been as pleased, more leaking than we've experienced w/Mother-Ease.
I ditto the preference for snaps over velcro. Not only is the velcro a pain for washing, but it's easier for the kids to undo when they get older. The snaps are easy for parents to do but too hard for toddlers to undo themselves.
I agree you should buy or borrow a few of various types and actually use them before you make the big investment. When you do buy I'd go with as many as you can afford. I love having lots, esp if you may have more than one kid in diapers at the same time. You get to put off the wash that much longer.
Oh, and the sprayer attached to the toilet is awesome.
adding my two cents. we have tried 1 fuzzi bunz, a few bumgenius, prowraps with chinese prefolds, and bummis super whisper wraps with chinese prefolds. i hate to admit it (just because i really, really like the bumgenius) but i think i would have to say that performance/ease-wise, the wraps with prefolds wins (and is also kelly's preference). i've absorption/leaking problems with both the fuzzi bunz and bum genius and also the elastic on the bumgenius keeps giving out on me (could be because of how i'm washing it? but either way, its happening and its not on the wraps). wraps are also nice because once the baby stops pooping EVERY diaper change, you can actually reuse them without washing, just tossing out the wet prefold (like alleke had one wrap on all day today).
echoing previous posters, i would recommend trying a few to see what you both like best.
also echoing previous posters, i would recommend either getting a diaper service, a volunteer who is not one of you that will take on all diaper washing and drying duty, or using disposables the first month at least. you will struggle to wash yourself, much less diapers!
also, i would highly, highly recommend home-made flannel wipes. we (grandma and I) just cut up a bunch of scrap flannel into roughly 7-in squares and did a easy stitch on the edges to prevent raveling. we diaper in the bathroom and just wet them in the sink.
also, up until about 3-4 months you could/might have blow-outs no matter which diapers you use. however, i have a feeling that what might work the best is something that ties under a wrap. Erika has been making some from t-shirts that i know she really likes, if either of you like sewing (or someone you know does) that might be an option. http://thehoogeveens.blogspot.com/2008/03/its-tax-season-again.html
and now, as if this "comment" is not long enough, kelly has posted a previous interview adding much more than two-cents that you can check out if you want :) http://spaindad.blogspot.com/2007/09/cloth-diapers-questions-and-answers.html
